Achilles Tendon Rupture
A rupture of the Achilles tendon is a complete tear often occurring during sudden acceleration or jumping. It causes immediate pain and loss of strength.
-
Sudden sharp pain in the back of the ankle
Popping sensation at the time of injury
Difficulty walking or pushing off
-
Physical exam with the Thompson test confirms rupture; ultrasound or MRI defines the extent.
-
Treatment may be non-surgical with functional bracing or surgical repair. Minimally invasive repair techniques allow for smaller incisions and faster rehabilitation.
-
Return to sport typically occurs within 6-9 months after surgical repair.
