Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are among the most common sports injuries, resulting from overstretching or tearing of the ankle ligaments, usually on the outer side of the joint.
-
Pain and swelling around the ankle
Bruising and tenderness
Instability or difficulty bearing weight
-
Clinical exam and X-rays help assess ligament injury and exclude fractures. MRI may be used for severe or chronic cases.
-
Mild sprains are treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), followed by rehabilitation. Severe sprains or chronic instability may benefit from minimally invasive ligament reconstruction.
-
Most sprains heal within 2–6 weeks; surgical repair requires 3–4 months for full recovery.
