Flexor Hallucis Tendonitis

Flexor hallucis tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon that flexes the big toe, often seen in athletes, dancers, and runners. Overuse, trauma, or biomechanical stress can contribute to injury.

Anterior Ankle Impingement
    • Pain along the bottom or inside of the big toe

    • Swelling and tenderness over the tendon

    • Pain with push-off or toe flexion during activity

  • Physical exam and imaging (ultrasound or MRI) confirm tendon inflammation or partial tears.

    • Non-surgical:  Rest, activity modification, splints, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory measures.

    • Surgical/minimally invasive:  Debridement or tendon repair may be considered in persistent or severe cases using small incisions to limit tissue trauma.

  • Most patients improve in 6–12 weeks with conservative care. Post-surgical recovery may take 3–4 months.
