Hallux Valgus (Bunion)

Hallux valgus, commonly called a bunion, is a deformity of the big toe joint where the toe drifts outward and the joint protrudes. It can result from genetics, footwear, or biomechanical factors, leading to pain and difficulty wearing shoes.

Anterior Ankle Impingement
    • Visible bump on the inside of the big toe

    • Pain and swelling around the joint

    • Difficulty wearing shoes or walking comfortably

  • Diagnosis is based on physical examination and weight-bearing X-rays to evaluate the degree of deformity and joint alignment.

    • Non-surgical:  Shoe modifications, orthotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy.

    • Surgical/minimally invasive:  Various bunion correction procedures, including osteotomies and soft tissue realignment, can now be performed using minimally invasive techniques to reduce pain, scarring, and recovery time.

  • Recovery depends on the procedure, with most minimally invasive bunion corrections allowing return to regular activity within 6-8 weeks.
