Posterior Tibial Tendon Injuries
Posterior tibial tendon injuries can range from tendinitis to partial tears, often resulting in progressive flatfoot deformity. These injuries are common in middle-aged adults and athletes who place repetitive stress on the arch.
-
Medial ankle and arch pain
Swelling and tenderness along the tendon
Flattening of the arch or difficulty standing on tiptoe
-
Physical examination and imaging (MRI or ultrasound) assess tendon integrity and the degree of associated deformity.
-
Non-surgical: Bracing, orthotics, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications.
Surgical/minimally invasive: Tendon repair, tendon transfer, or flatfoot reconstruction using arthroscopic or minimally invasive techniques for advanced cases.
-
Conservative management may improve symptoms within 3–6 months. Post-surgical recovery typically requires 4–6 months with structured rehabilitation.
