Subtalar Arthritis
Subtalar arthritis affects the joint beneath the ankle that allows side-to-side foot motion. It often develops after trauma, chronic instability, or degenerative changes.
-
Pain on the lateral or posterior foot
Stiffness and swelling
Difficulty walking on uneven terrain
-
X-rays and CT scans are commonly used to evaluate joint degeneration and alignment.
-
Non-surgical: Orthotics, bracing, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, injection.
Surgical/minimally invasive: Arthroscopy and debridement of the joint. Subtalar fusion can relieve pain and improve stability; minimally invasive approaches reduce tissue trauma and facilitate faster recovery.
-
Full recovery usually takes 3–6 months post-fusion, with most patients experiencing significant pain relief.
