Turf Toe
Turf toe is a sprain of the ligaments surrounding the big toe joint, usually caused by hyperextension during sports played on artificial turf.
-
Pain and swelling at the base of the big toe
Difficulty pushing off during running or jumping
Stiffness and decreased motion in the toe
-
Clinical exam and X-rays rule out fractures; MRI may assess soft tissue injury.
-
Mild cases are managed with rest, taping, and stiff-soled shoes. Severe ligament tears may require surgical repair.
-
Most cases resolve within 4–6 weeks, while surgical recovery may take up to 3-6 months.
